Is the Armed Forces Covenant law? While the Covenant itself is a national promise rather than a single standalone law, elements of it now have legal backing through the Armed Forces Act.
The legislation introduced a legal duty requiring certain public bodies in England to give due regard to the principles of the Armed Forces Covenant when making decisions about:

This means relevant organisations must actively consider how their decisions affect members of the Armed Forces community.
Outside these legal duties, many organisations, including businesses, charities and local authorities, choose to sign the Covenant voluntarily, demonstrating their ongoing commitment to supporting military personnel and their families.
Many signatories also work towards the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme, which celebrates organisations that go above and beyond in supporting reservists, veterans and military families.
What is the Armed Forces Covenant Trust Fund?
The Armed Forces Covenant Trust Fund is an independent organisation that awards grants to projects supporting the Armed Forces community across the UK. Funding is provided to charities, local authorities, community groups and other organisations delivering projects that improve the lives of:
- Serving personnel
- Veterans
- Military families
- Reservists
- Cadet organisations
Projects funded by the Trust have supported everything from mental wellbeing initiatives and family services to community integration and employment programmes.
