Being in the Armed Forces can mean spending significant periods away from your home, partner and children. Whether you’re deployed, away on exercise, completing training or serving in a role that regularly takes you away from your duty station, separation can be one of the more challenging parts of military life.
Longer Separation Allowance (LSA) is designed to recognise this additional separation.
But what exactly is LSA, who is entitled to it, and how do the British Army LSA levels work?
Here’s what you need to know about Longer Separation Allowance and how it could affect you and your family. What is Longer Separation Allowance?
What is LSA?
Longer Separation Allowance (LSA) is a payment for eligible Service personnel who experience separation because of their Service duties. It compensates for separation beyond what’s already recognised through the X-Factor element of basic pay, and is paid at progressively higher levels the more qualifying separation you accumulate.
It isn’t a replacement for your salary, and it isn’t automatic for every Service person -eligibility depends on your circumstances, under the rules in JSP 752.
Who is eligible for LSA?
LSA can apply to Regular and eligible Reserve personnel, regardless of Personal Status Category (it isn’t restricted to those with a spouse, civil partner or children). Eligibility falls into three categories:
- Involuntary separation – you can’t return to your duty station or family home because of the nature or location of your duty
- On the Road (OTR) posts – roles with an established pattern of frequent short separations
- Voluntary separation – you’ve chosen to serve unaccompanied in specific circumstances
Because eligibility depends on your assignment and personal circumstances, check the current JSP 752 or speak to your Unit HR team if you’re unsure.
What counts as qualifying separation?
For involuntary separation, you generally need to be away from your family home, permanent residence or duty station for at least seven consecutive days, unable to return for 24 hours during a weekend or stand-down because of the nature or location of your duty.
Exceptions apply, for example, LSA is payable from the first day if you’re on temporary duty somewhere Field Conditions have been declared for both food and Single Living Accommodation. Simply choosing to stay away when you could return doesn’t create an entitlement.
British Army LSA levels and LSA rates
LSA isn’t a fixed payment. There are 16 levels, and your level rises as you accumulate qualifying days and it doesn’t reset. Separation accumulates across your whole career, so repeated periods away over several years will move you up the levels even if no single deployment was especially long.
The current JSP 752 sets out these daily British Army LSA rates:
| LSA level | Qualifying separation | Daily rate |
| Level 1 | Up to 280 days | £9.25 |
| Level 2 | 281–460 days | £14.45 |
| Level 3 | 461–640 days | £19.67 |
| Level 4 | 641–820 days | £21.59 |
| Level 5 | 821–1,000 days | £23.23 |
| Level 6 | 1,001–1,180 days | £24.89 |
| Level 7 | 1,181–1,360 days | £26.53 |
| Level 8 | 1,361–1,540 days | £29.03 |
| Level 9 | 1,541–1,720 days | £30.70 |
| Level 10 | 1,721–1,900 days | £32.35 |
| Level 11 | 1,901–2,080 days | £34.00 |
| Level 12 | 2,081–2,260 days | £35.69 |
| Level 13 | 2,261–2,440 days | £37.32 |
| Level 14 | 2,441–2,800 days | £38.98 |
| Level 15 | 2,801–3,160 days | £40.62 |
| Level 16 | 3,161+ days | £42.25 |
These are daily rates, paid through your salary monthly in arrears, and LSA is taxable.
Voluntary vs involuntary separation
If you’ve chosen to serve unaccompanied from your immediate family in certain circumstances, you can still claim LSA but you remain at Level 1 regardless of how long the separation continues, and it doesn’t count toward the levels above. This is the key difference from involuntary separation, where qualifying days build toward higher levels.
How is LSA paid?
LSA is processed automatically by your Unit HR/Personnel Office as part of the JPA Arrivals Process. It’s still worth checking your circumstances have been recorded correctly – if you think you should be receiving LSA but it isn’t showing in your pay, speak to your Unit HR or personnel office.
How LSA interacts with other allowances
LSA can’t be claimed for the same period as Get You Home (GYH) Travel, or for periods when you’re working remotely away from your permanent duty station. It’s also separate from Operational Allowance, which relates to qualifying operational service rather than separation itself – the two have different eligibility criteria.
Protecting your family financially with Trinity
LSA recognises the additional burden of qualifying Service-related separation, increasing through 16 levels as separation accumulates across your career, but it’s only one part of your wider financial position.
While LSA compensates for the disruption of being away, it isn’t designed to protect your family’s finances should something happen. Periods of separation are a good moment to think about what protection your family would need if your circumstances changed.
Give your family the financial security and peace of mind they deserve with Trinity’s Military Life Insurance, built specifically around the risks of military life.
