What are the age limits to join the Army reserves in Britain?

Age limits for the Army Reserve depend on whether you plan to join as a soldier or as an officer.

Reservist soldier

To join as a reservist soldier, you must be at least 17 years and 9 months old when you apply. You can join most roles until you are 42 years and 6 months old, but must have joined by the 43rd birthday regardless. Rolefinder covers specific roles in more detail and explains the age limits to provide further clarification.

Some roles may have higher age limits, but you should always check in advance.

Reservist officer

To join the Army Reserve as an Officer, you must be at least 17 years and 9 months old when you apply. Applications remain open until you are 48 years and 9 months old, after which opportunities become more limited. That said, some specialist roles do have higher age limits.

What are the age limits for specialist roles in the Army?

Age limits for specialist roles in the Army vary by specialism. For some positions, the age limit can be as high as 55, whereas other roles may stipulate that 36 years and 11 months is the maximum.

Specialist roles in the Army are where the applicant has a specific skill they are already qualified in for the Army rather than starting their Army career from scratch. These could be dentists, doctors, legal officers or pharmacists, for example.

Because these are specialisms the Army needs, the upper age limit tends to be more generous, but age limits are role-specific and can be changed. Therefore, older applicants with specialist skills should always check by calling 0345 600 8080 before applying. This will help answer any questions.
